A recent study entitled “Classroom Seating Considerations for 21st Century Students and Faculty” states that “Embedding choice into the classroom is essential given the diversity of learners, instructors, and instructional modalities, and seating styles in classrooms are easily changeable environmental variables that impact choice, purpose, inclusivity, and functionality” (Harvey & Kenyon, 2013).

In the classroom, we want students to be able to utilize our pieces just as they would a notebook or a pencil. With creative designs like our Eagle’s Nest, for example, students are able to both find a calming space away from the group and collaborate easily with others. Additionally, the mobility of our pieces allow students to play an active role in the creation of their learning spaces.

Why Soft Seating? Part 1

A pencil, a textbook, and a computer. Is that all? Scholars need other essentials, not quite as concrete perhaps, but of even greater importance. An inquisitive mind, a curious disposition, and a keen internal compass all help learning flourish. Yet, unlike their physical counterparts, these tools cannot simply be dispensed; they must be cultivated.

Here at Fōmcore, we believe that soft seating is one of the most impactful tools for classroom development and success. We create our designs with our end goal in mind: to inspire healthy and adaptable spaces in everyday environments.

Here at Fōmcore, we believe that soft seating is one of the most impactful tools for classroom development and success.

With creative designs like our Robin’s Nest, students are able to both find a calming space away from the group and collaborate easily with others.

Classroom instructors play a role in the cultivation of these inspirational spaces as well. Harvey & Kenyon write that “Although they may not directly use the chair themselves, the chair becomes a classroom tool through which work, learning, and collaboration are realized” (2013). Instructors benefit from the addition of adaptable and flexible seating, and they’re able to provide students with the tools that they need to grow in their education.

We aim to cultivate learning tools by providing products that help create spaces where these intrinsic tools are discovered and developed when in the hands of students and educators. Our pieces function as more than just comfortable seats for students; they allow the students to create their own learning spaces, leading to collaborative and more focused learning. In this way, our soft seating acts as a building block for students as they discover different ways to learn.
